The representatives of the genus Adiantum, inhabiting many regions of the world, are perennial herbaceous ferns. As indoor plants, several species are used with a delicate bright green foliage, which is rightly considered the main virtue and distinctive feature of the genus. Adiantum, grown in room conditions, are undemanding and with regular care for many years do not lose decorativeness.
Adianum Venerin hair (A. capillus-veneris)
Among the dozens of varieties of ferns, the most famous and beloved by the florists is the adianum Venin of hair. The species, found naturally in the Mediterranean, in the Crimea and the Caucasus, as well as in the American continent and in the countries of North Africa and Asia Minor, is easily acclimatized at home. In the south of Europe can survive the winter and in the open ground.
The height of the plant slightly exceeds half a meter. Leaves pinnate, asymmetrical, in length can grow up to 20-25 centimeters. Individual segments, which are obovate, do not exceed 2-3 cm in length. The upper part of the segments is cut and often has the shape of a fan. Light leaf plates contrast with dark, almost black petioles, thanks to which the plant got its name.
In nature, Venenar hair prefers to live rocky shores of streams, mountain rivers and other water bodies. At the same time on small accumulations of soil between the stones a powerful rhizome with a length of less than a meter helps to support the plant. A lot of subtle auxiliary roots cling to the rocky ledges, so you can see the adianum of this species, as in the photo, on steep slopes.
Maturation of spores located along the edge of the leaf segments, runs from the end of spring and until autumn. At home, a slowly growing fern is often propagated vegetatively.
Large-sized Adiantum (A. Macrophyllum)
The large-sized adianum pictured in the photo is a perennial fern with a height of 30 to 50 cm. In nature, the species is found in the tropical belt of Central and South America. Fern with a beautiful rosette of large leaves of characteristic shape can be found along the roads, under bridges and near drains.
To find the presented adianum it is possible on the pointed segments of leaves, on a cut of which the zones of ripening of spores are located. In addition, the young adianum foliage has an unusual pinkish coloration, and only the adult leaves become light green.
Adiantum stop-like (A. pedatum)
One of the types of ferns with high frost resistance, which allows you to grow an idiot in a garden in the south and center of Russia. The leaves of this species of the adianum are flat, bright green, with dark thin rods. The height of the adult fern reaches 0.6 meters, with the bush well holding an attractive hemispherical dome shape. The leaf segments are cut along one edge, where the spore congestion zones are located.
In natural conditions and in potter culture the fern of this species grows slowly, but we like flower growers for high decorative and unpretentiousness. The main condition for the successful cultivation of this type of adianum is a loose ground, the presence of a shadow and competent irrigation.
One of the interesting varieties of this fern is the adianum of the stop-like subspecies aleuticum.
According to the description and the photo of the adianum, the species is distinguished by a graceful shape and growth of about 30 centimeters. The width of an adult plant is somewhat larger. On the ground, the fern is held by a thick surface rhizome. Vayi is a dappled green coloration located on black-brown rods. The leaves are twice pinnate, symmetrical. Individual sections of the leaf have one dissected edge with rounded or blunt teeth.
Adianum Venustum (A. venustum)
In Nepal and the Indian state of Kashmir, you can see another type of adianum with obovate, somewhat elongated segments of leaves, dark, purple-brown petioles and a height of about 40 cm.
The view of the adianum, as in the photo, is highly decorative and can serve both to decorate the interior, and to create a unique atmosphere in the garden. The plant is also applicable for vertical gardening. High frost resistance allows to grow a fern in the south of Russia in the open ground.
Adiantum kidney-shaped (A. reniforme)
The flower growers, who are just beginning to get acquainted with the species of the adianum, looking at the adiantum kidney-shaped, often do not believe that a plant with horseshoe-shaped leaves on long petioles is a fern. Indeed, a surprisingly modest, but full of grace plant is not like the famous adianum Venerin hair or other species, whose photo and description are given above.
Occurring in the wild form in the Canary Islands, the adiantum kidney-shaped, depending on the species, reaches 5-30 cm in height. There are two subspecies of this plant.
According to the photo and description, the adiformum reniforme is a larger fern with leaves up to seven centimeters in diameter and petioles of 20 centimeters in height. A subspecies of pusillum is two times smaller.
The habitat of these plants is similar. Ferns occur in the penumbra on wet rocky outcroppings under trees or on steep slopes along the sea.
The Adianum Ruddy (A. raddianum)
In the wild, an adianum of this species can be seen in South America. The growing leaves of the Radianti’s adianum stand out with wedge-shaped segments adorned with a rounded edge. Shares of a sheet not more than a centimeter in length. The very leaves are large, up to 45 cm in length. Petioles are thin, drooping, brown or almost black, as in other species of adianum.
Today, at the disposal of lovers of indoor ferns there are several varieties of the Ruddy’s adianum with a non-repetitive shape and coloring of the foliage.
Adianum Raddi Fragrans (A. raddianum Fragrantissimum)
Rapidly growing and very attractive variety of fern Ruddy forms the crown to a height of up to half a meter. Adianum fragrans is distinguished by the figured form of leaf segments and their smaller density on black-gray or brown petioles.
Chilean Champion (A. Chilense)
The Chilean Adianum was named after the country of origin. In nature, the plant reaches a size of 30-40 cm.
At home, the image of the adianum pictured in the photo can be found at an altitude of 2000 meters. Fern feels equally well in the valleys, and on the slopes of the mountains covered with broad-leaved forest.
The Chilean adianum perfectly tolerates the climatic conditions of the wet forest, where the breaks between the rainy seasons are no more than a month. This variety of fern grows also in relatively dry areas, where the drought can last up to five months.
The Ethiopian Adianum (A. aethiopicum)
Despite the name, you can see in the nature the image of an idiot in the photo not only on the African coast, but in Australia and New Zealand.
Leaflets are black at the bottom. To the top of the leaf, they change color to brownish-purple. Segments are wide, wedge-shaped with a single, almost rounded edge. The color of the green is light. The total height of the fern reaches 50 centimeters.
