For the first time seedlings of the hybrid form of the Velez grapes became available to lovers of this culture in 2009. Photo of the variety and description of the Velez grape obtained by the famous Ukrainian breeder-enthusiast V.V. Zagorulko, caused serious interest from the viticulturists of Ukraine, southern Russia and even Belarus.
Veles characteristics and description
The new seedless grapes showed very early maturation periods, even superior to the “parent” varieties of Rusbol and Sophia. Since the opening of the kidneys before harvesting, only 95-100 days pass, whereas in Sofia this period is 110-125 days, and Rusbol ripens in 115-125 days. Obviously, the earlier maturation of Velez was influenced by the more distant ancestor – the grade of seedless grape of Magarach, giving berries within 80-85 days after the kidneys burst.
The hybrid is characterized by a very high growth rate of bushes, under favorable weather conditions, shoots are well maturing.
The number of eyes on the bush should not exceed 35. With this account it is necessary, as in the video, to form a grape bush, while on shoots leave 2-4 powerful voluminous inflorescences consisting of their small yellow-green bisexual flowers. This structure of the flower of the prospective hybrid facilitates pollination and allows you to tie very large brushes, up to 30 cm long and about 20 cm wide. The bunches are voluminous, very branched, of medium density or loose, in the shape of a wide cone.
According to the description and photos of the Velez grape variety, ripe bunches weigh from 600 to 2000 grams, although the wine growers who have already grown shrubs in their plots and get the first crops are shown brushes weighing about 3 kg. Hybrid, attributed to the third class of seedlessness, is characterized by high consumer appeal and taste.
As the ripening berries acquire a spectacular pink tint and reach a weight of 5 grams.
Dense, jelly, translucent flesh has a decent taste with a pronounced muscat color. According to experts, the taste of the new hybrid deserves higher ratings than the berries of another famous variety – kishmish Radiant. It is no coincidence that the novelty of selection already in 2010, precisely at the tasting, was awarded two top awards at the Crimean competition “Golden bunch of grapes”.
The berries are covered with inconspicuous grape skin of medium thickness. In 20% of the berries, the rudiments of seeds that do not interfere with the perception of taste are noted.
Features of the technology of growing grapes
If the technology of growing grapes provides for the treatment of gibberellin brushes, oval berries grow larger and somewhat longer, while the number of fully seedless fruits increases sharply. The already available experience of growing grapes on the open ground shows that high humidity can cause the development of gray rot on the cracking of ripening berries.
Brushes with ripe berries are well kept and transported. Shoots well tolerate the weight of the bunches. In dry weather, brushes up to one and a half months can be preserved on the vine, completely preserving all the taste and juiciness. According to the vine-growers, even a slight degree of zaizyumlivaniya is not reflected in the bouquet of grapes, but only strengthens nutmeg notes.
According to the photo of the variety and the description of the grapes, Veles is prone to the formation of stepsons. In southern regions, such an increase is supplemented by an additional second harvest, which ripens in late September or in October. In the middle band, where there is less time to mature shoots, it is better to remove the stepson.
Reproduction and care of grapes Velez
For the reproduction of grapes cuttings harvested in the fall are used. Saplings can be either with their own root system, or grafted. Survival in new plantings is high, fruiting under favorable conditions can begin as early as the second year, but for better development of the bush, it is more expedient to remove the resulting inflorescences. In the care of the hybrid form will not cause much trouble. The Veles grape has an average resistance of 3 to 3 points to downy mildew and oidium. When carrying out preventive treatments for this culture, the risk of contracting these diseases becomes minimal.
Winter hardiness of the variety that can withstand frosts down to -21 ° C is not enough to grow grapes in the open without additional shelters in the middle belt. In the southern regions, Velez wintering well, and even with damage from the cold of individual shoots, bushes in a season are quickly restored.
Improve the aging of shoots and improve the quality of the crop can be done with the help of spring pruning and normalization.
At the same time on the vine leave for 6-8 eyes to escape, and under favorable climatic conditions on strong bushes, the load is increased. As can be seen in the photo and description, the Velez grape variety is characterized by high yield. Bushes annually form inflorescences and give a large number of ovaries. The first main crop is removed in August, and with the use of stepchildren, the second wave of berries ripens in the middle of autumn.
This characteristic feature of the culture allows us to talk about the suitability of a hybrid for growing in a variety of climatic zones, from the middle lanes of Russia to the Kuban and the Crimea.
