Pomelo – a curiosity among exotic fruits that are brought to us from warm edges. Some are afraid to buy these huge fruits with a characteristic citrus aroma, for fear of their mysterious size and not knowing what they taste. However, these fears are completely groundless, since the fruit is very edible and tasty, in addition, it feels good at home, because we grow lemons and mandarins in pots.
However, before you hide a large stone in the ground, it is worth knowing how the pomelo grows and what it represents as culture. Looking at very large fruits, it is not difficult to imagine that they will not grow on a small bush, and this should be taken into account when planning to grow exotics in a tub. However, let’s talk about everything in order.
What is growing pomelo?
The pomelo fruit grows on an evergreen tree, which can bulge up to 15 m in height. The tree has a beautiful round crown and large leaves of a rich green color with a glossy sheen. There are small spines on the branches, but there are also beech sorts. Fruit tree several times a year: first on the branches of large white blossoms, and then in their place in 5-7 months ripe delicious fruit weighing up to 2 kg (some specimens weigh up to 10 kg).
Edible flesh flesh: in structure it looks like an orange, but with larger slices covered with a white hard film. On top of the pomelo thick skin. The color and shape of the fruit depends on the variety. Most often on our counters are these types:
- spherical Khao horn, flesh sweet, white, skin yellow-green;
- pear-shaped Khao namphung, flesh yellow and sweet, peel green-yellow;
- flattened ball Khao paen, flesh white, with sour, shell yellow;
- pear-shaped Khao phuang, flesh yellow, acid, skin green with yellow;
- ball-shaped Thongdi, the flesh is sweet, pink, the skin is green.
The fruit itself belongs to the citrus family and is a separate species. The opinion that pomelo – a hybrid of grapefruit, is erroneous. On the contrary, it is the grapefruit obtained from the crossing of pomelo and orange.
As heat-loving culture in the local climate, bromeliad does not grow, but it feels very good in the room conditions, as well as in heated greenhouses. It reproduces by bones, which are planted in nutritious soil.
Providing the plant with good lighting, heat, regular watering and humidity of at least 60%, you can get a beautiful decorative tree. It is easy to form, due to which it is possible to restrain active growth and give the plant compact dimensions for the room. The only minus pomelo – flowering and fruiting must wait at least 10 years. If you are ready to wait, boldly plant a tropical visitor and enjoy a delicious harvest.
