Redness of beet leaves: what is the reason and how to deal with it

On my last visit to the villa site, I noticed that the leaves of my beet were of a strange color – they faded in some beds, and on the rest they became red. Tell me why the leaves of the beet grow red and what should be done in this case?

beet topsWhen growing beets, the hassle of gardening is a little – water, weed and break. Further the vegetable grows independently and it is possible not to glance on beds up to harvesting. On the other hand, it is not enough to miss the problems that can significantly reduce the number of root crops and worsen their quality. One of such common problems is the change in the tops of their color. In healthy bushes, the petioles are red, and the leaves are green, but sometimes the red color begins to shift to the leaf plate.

Why do the leaves turn red at the beet and what to do with it depends on the specific causes of this phenomenon. Most often they are:

  • lack of microelements;
  • increased acidity of the soil.

Beet tops are an indicator of plant health. As soon as it begins to lack micronutrients, it immediately affects the leaves. By the nature of the changes, it is possible to establish in which substance the beet needs:

  1. Lack of sodium. Externally, healthy juicy leaves acquire a red color. The solution to the problem: pour the planting directly from above with a solution of the kitchen salt (250 grams per bucket of water).
  2. Lack of phosphorus. Leaves first fade, then turn dark, and then turn red. The solution to the problem is to add superphosphate to the beds.
  3. Lack of potassium. The green color of the foliage gradually disappears, and in its place comes a rich dark red shade, with the leaves twisting. The solution of the problem is to feed the beet with potassium chloride.

It is important to establish precisely which substance the beets lack, because the excess of microelements will also affect the future crop.

High acidity

The beetroot blushes and if the soil on which it is grown has an increased level of acidity. Beets grow well and bear fruit only in neutral soils.

You can check the acidity of the earth in a folk way. To do this, moisten a handful of soil, roll it into a flat cake and pour a little vinegar on top. The appearance of bubbles indicates that the earth is alkaline.

If nothing happened, make another cake and sprinkle it with ordinary soda. With increased acidity, it hiss, at neutral – no reaction.

To reduce the acidity of the soil, apply ash to the site per 100 square meters of material per square meter of area.
